![]() Community Service Officers" Students Serving Students " Under the direct supervision of the Rutgers-Newark Department of Public
Safety, Community Service Officers act as the "eyes and ears" of the Police
Department and have been doing so since 2004 when the program took root at
Rutgers-Newark Campus.Community Service Officers are unarmed, uniformed students at Rutgers-Newark who perform routine patrols around campus on foot, on bicycles and on Segways. Additionally, Community Service Officers execute a variety of other duties to maintain and preserve a high level of safety within the Rutgers-Newark Community such as, conducting building checks, vehicular lock-outs & jump starts, driving university shuttles, providing escort services and providing security for special events such as Commencement and Rutgers sporting events. Students involved in this program undergo an extensive forty-hour academy training specifically addressing the security concerns of New Jersey Colleges and Universities. During this training, Community Services Officers are provided instruction by police officers on various law enforcement related topics including, New Jersey criminal law, issues of substance abuse, and cultural diversity. They are also given on-campus training to adequately address the safety concerns of the Rutgers-Newark campus. The primary responsibility for these diligent students is to observe, identify, and describe situations to the police department that unfavorably influence public safety and university policy. |
