Escorts | Bicycle/ Segway Patrol | Emergency Phones | Safety Tips

In addition to Police Officers, security operations on the Rutgers University Newark Campus are conducted by a proprietary security service composed of 20 Security Officers and 3 Security Lieutenants. Unarmed Security Officers patrol buildings and grounds and wear navy blue uniforms. Security Officers act as the eyes and ears of the University Police Department by observing, recognizing and reporting conditions to the Police Department that adversely affect public safety or University policy. The security service provides safety and security three hundred sixty-five days a year, twenty-four hours a day and maintain fixed and walking posts in the campus' academic buildings and student housing.

In addition, they provide quality of life services such as: assisting motorists with battery jumpstarts, and security transportation when shuttle services are not available.

Escorts

As a reminder to our community, the Department of Public Safety currently provides campus escorts to all who request it. Escorts are provided by Community Service Officers, Security Officers and Police Officers. This service can be provided at anytime, seven days a week. Emergency Telephones

Rutgers Newark has completed the installation of 80 Blue Light Emergency Phones. These phones have been strategically placed throughout campus and in parking facilities for easy access. To initiate, push the red button located on the phone. Once activated, you will reach a Police Dispatcher in approximately 15 seconds to assist you with your emergency. A highly visible blue strobe light will illuminate informing everyone in the vicinity that an emergency is in need of attention. In addition, these phones can be used to obtain additional services: Escorts, Motor Vehicle Assistance, Access to Buildings, and Shuttle Information.

When using these telephones, remember to:

  • Remain calm.
  • Speak clearly.
  • Tell the Dispatcher exactly what the problem is.
  • Give your location.
  • Give your name and address.

  • Stay on the telephone for any further instructions or questions.

    Indoor Red Emergency Telephone

Rutgers Newark also has red emergency phones strategically placed throughout the campus.

    Safety Tips

Auto Theft / Theft from Auto

One vehicle is stolen every 20 seconds in the United States. Stolen cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles cost victims time and money - and increase everyone's insurance premiums. They are also often used to commit other crimes. Don't become a victim of this serious crime.

    • Never leave your keys in the car or ignition.
    • Always lock your car, even if it's in front of your home.
    • Copy your tag number and vehicle identification number (VIN) on a card and keep it with your drivers license.
    • Do not leave vehicle credentials such as drivers license, registration or insurance cards in your vehicle.
    • Use any anti theft devices.
    • Never leave cellular phones, computers or book bags in plain sight.
    • Never leave loose change visible.

    Office Theft

    • Keep your purse, wallet, keys or other valuable items with you at all times or locked in a drawer or closet.
    • Check the identity of any strangers who are in your office, ask whom they are visiting and if you can help them find that person. If this makes you uncomfortable, inform security or police about your suspicions.
    • Always let someone know where you'll be, whether it's coming in late, working late, going to the photocopier or mail room, going out to lunch or a meeting.
    • If you bring personal items to work such as a radio, calculator or computer, mark them with your name or initials and an identification number such as your drivers license number.
    • Report any broken or flickering lights, dimly lit corridors, doors that don't lock properly or broken windows. Don't wait for someone else to do it.
    • If you have access to a building that is closed do not prop any doors open and make sure that the doors close securely.
    • Be discreet. Don't advertise your social life or vacation plans and those of your co-workers to people visiting or calling your place of work.

    School Theft

    • Never leave your dorm room door unlocked. Students at this University have been victims of theft while visiting next door, eating, laundering, studying, showering, and sleeping.
    • Never leave your property unattended. Students at this University have been victims of theft after leaving their belongings, such as books, laptops, and cellular phones, unattended to use the restrooms, look for books, ask for assistance, and talk to friends.
    • Familiarize yourself with the Campus layout and local phone numbers that will be used in emergency situations.
    • During evening hours walk in groups.

    Traffic Safety Tips

    • Always cross at pedestrian crosswalks.
    • Obey the speed limit. The speed limit in the City of Newark is 25mph unless otherwise posted.
