The Rutgers Police Department – Newark Division has the primary responsibility of protecting and serving the Newark Campus community and is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Rutgers Police Department - Newark Division has maintained a full-time police department since 1971, and currently has 34 sworn law enforcement personnel within its ranks. The Department is located in Downtown Newark at 200 University Avenue. Rutgers Police Officers are commissioned by the State of New Jersey, to enforce Motor Vehicle and Criminal Statutes. The armed commissioned officers receive a minimum of 19 weeks training through a Police Training Commission certified Police Academy. University Police Officers wear blue uniforms and are always in direct radio communication with Police Headquarters. Officers patrol the campus on foot, bicycle, Segway and by marked and unmarked police motor vehicles. The Department has an excellent working relationship with the law enforcement community at the Municipal, County, State and Federal levels.They utilize the latest in law enforcement technology, such as Radar, LoJack Recovery and SCIC/NCIC.

The Rutgers University Police Department is concerned about your safety and actively investigates all reported crimes. Please be aware of these safety tips:
 
+ Be aware of your surroundings and be alert and attuned to people and circumstances around you. 
+ Avoid the use of alcohol and other drugs. Persons under the influence are much more likely to be the victims of crime. 
+ Avoid isolation; whenever possible walk in pairs. 
+ After dark, walk with others.
+ Use well-lighted paths. 
+ If you believe you are being followed, go to the nearest home, building or institution where you can get help. 
+ If you observe someone following you as you leave an establishment, go back to the establishment and seek help. 
+ Keep the door to your residence locked at all times.
+ Familiarize yourself with the locations of the “Blue” exterior emergency phones located throughout campus.

Members of the university community are encouraged to use university transportation and university escort services, especially after dark. Please call 973-353-5581.

A free campus shuttle service runs to mass transit system locations, including train stations, from 3:30 pm to midnight, Mondays through Fridays.  Route maps specifying shuttle stops are available from the Department of Public Safety, 200 University Avenue
