In addition to Police Officers, security operations on the Rutgers University Newark Campus are conducted by a proprietary security service composed of 18 Security Officers and 2 Security Lieutenants. Unarmed Security Officers patrol buildings and grounds and wear navy blue uniforms. Security Officers act as the eyes and ears of the University Police Department by observing, recognizing and reporting conditions to the Police Department that adversely affect public safety or University policy. The security service provides safety and security three hundred sixty-five days a year, twenty-four hours a day and maintain fixed and walking posts in the campus' academic buildings and student housing.
